Our Name: "BDK e.V. – Association for Art Education"

Founded in 1950 as „Bund Deutscher Kunsterzieher“ (German Association of Art Teachers), BDK redefined itself as an association for art education through the change of name in 2005.
The acronym „BDK“ was maintained for historical reasons. It refers to the origins of the registered association (e.V.). At the same time, it emphasizes the continuity of BDK’s work for the preservation and advancement of art teacher education and art as a school subject, not least during the times of German separation and in reunited Germany.
As the Association for Art Education, BDK represents the issues of art education on national and federal state levels. It especially promotes and supports the work of art teachers in schools and universities, as well as in teacher training and in the sector of non-formal education.
